There are a lot of options when it comes to building your custom home or remodeling your bathroom, kitchen, dining room, or other area of the house. How can you be assured the company you select is the right fit for you, and will they give you the results you demand? Building a custom home or remodeling your existing property can be one of the largest investments you’ll make, so you want to be sure you’re making the right choice.
Fortunately we’ve been in the business for over 60 years and can offer some helpful advice when you’re shopping for your next custom home builder or remodeling company. Use this guide as a way to help choose the right company for you, and perhaps save you from a very costly mistake.
- Do Your Homework – Breakdown the area’s local builders and remodelers and start to gather information on each company. There are a number of locations you can find reviews from previous customers, and to get the whole picture you’ll likely want to consult a few. Houzz, Facebook, and Google’s Local (Google Plus) pages are great places to start.
- Focus On Your Specific Job – Find remodelers who do specific projects you like. If you’re looking for a basement remodel, look at the different company’s basement projects. We’ve made it easy to browse our previous photos as we broke down each project into categories. Check out our custom home gallery to view some of the custom home projects we’ve completed, or our renovation gallery to see some of our remodeling projects.
- Permanent Address & Certifications – People get scammed all the time by those door-to-door contractors who collect a bunch of money up front and skip town never to be heard from again. Make sure the company has a permanent address, and it certainly helps to hold professional designations from homebuilding, remodeling, and other appropriate associations. These can include the Lancaster County Building Industry Association (Lancaster County BIA), the Pennsylvania Builders Association (PBA), the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), and the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce (LCC), all of which our team here at Norman L Graham belong to.
- Licensed & Insured – You’ll want to make sure the builder or remodeler you select is licensed for the area, and insured as well. If you select a business that is missing general liability insurance for example, you may be liable for any construction-related accidents that occur.
There’s a lot that goes into choosing the right custom home builder or remodeler. This list is just the tip of the iceberg, but will get you started on the right path towards finding your best option. Take some time to research your project and it will save you more than just the headache in the long run.
